About Library


Bangladesh Medical University (BMU) is the premier Postgraduate Medical Institution of the country. It bears the heritage of the Institute of Postgraduate Medical Research (IPGMR), which was established in December 1965. In the year 1998, the Government upgraded the IPGMR into a Medical University through an Act passed by the National Parliament of Bangladesh. The view was to develop human resources for health, the national health care services, and overseas employment by imparting graduate medical education and training in various fields of medical sciences. It also aims at promoting research appropriate to the development of healthcare services and medical science as a whole.

This University has a well-equipped modern academic library known as BMU Central Library situated at Block # A, comprising 22,000 sft on the 4th and 5th floors. The library can accommodate over 750 users at a time in its well-furnished reading area.

Digital Library

  1. The Digital Library of BMU has a notable collection of digital books/journals, texts, references, and audio-visual materials. 
  2. Teachers, students, and officers of this university are entitled to use the digital library. They have to collect a proximity/membership card in order to use the Digital Library.
  3. Only digital/online books/journals and electronic documents can be used in the Digital Library. Any sort of group discussion or conventional books is not allowed.
  4. Members of the Digital Library may collect printouts of digital/online materials by paying fixed charges.
  5. The Digital Library also provides full-text access to more than 40,000 electronic journals through the HINARI, AGORA, OARE, GOALI, and ARDI databases. Through the University Local Area Network, all departments have access to the Central Library.  
  6. In the Digital Library, more than 60 computers are used for browsing the internet.

Reference Section

  1. Books/study materials will not be issued from the Reference Section.
  2. No one is allowed to get inside the reference section with his/her personal books, bag, file, folder, or anything of this kind.
  3. Users of the library will be responsible for any damage to books or study materials in the reference section [e.g., tearing a page, scratching a page, etc.]. In these cases, up to twice the price can be fined for damaging local books/study materials, and three times the price for imported items.

Photocopy / Scan Service

Photocopy scanning service is provided to library members upon request, for a fee.

Liberation War Corner

  1. Framed Photograph of `Father of the nation’ Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, Sayed Nazrul Islam acting President of the provisional government of Bangladesh at the period of liberation war in 1971, Prime Minister Taj Uddin Ahmed, Finance Minister M. Mansur Ali, Home Minister A H M Qamaruzzaman, General M.A.G. Osmani, Commander in Chief in Liberation War, the 7 Beer-Sreshtha of the war, is being displayed with due respect. Besides these, a photograph of the surrender of Pakistani armed forces led by Niazi is also being displayed as a historical evidence.
  2. Historic, biographic, artistic, and literary works, books, documents, photographs, films, and documentaries on the Great Liberation War are collected and preserved at the Liberation War Corner.
  3. A list with particulars, photographs, and used utensils of the martyrs of the great liberation war who were teachers, students, and office staff of various medical colleges, including the IPGMR, is preserved in this corner.
  4. Liberation War Corner is open to all members who have a valid library card, regardless of whether it is general or digital.
  5. No item/material will be issued from this corner.
  6. No one is allowed to visit the `Liberation War Corner’ with his/her personal books, bag, file, folder, or anything of this kind.

Audio-Visual Section

  1. Audio and video, films, and documentaries related to medical education are preserved in the audio-visual section.
  2. Anyone with a general or digital membership card can use the audio-visual section. No other card will be issued for the purpose.
  3. No one is allowed to get inside the `Audio-Visual Section’ with his/her personal books, bag, file, folder, or anything of this kind.

Working Hour

The general Section of the library is open from 8:00 am to 9:45 pm, the Reference Section from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm, and the Digital Section from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm on weekdays.

Collection and Resources

  1. The library book collection consists of over 26,907 volumes covering the subject areas of health, research, the practice of medicine, related biomedical and allied health care disciplines, nursing, and the clinical and educational needs of its clients.
  2. The journal collection consists of 5308 volumes of Bound Journals arranged alphabetically on the shelves. The Library has been receiving a large number of periodicals and other publications every year.
  3. Reference collection can only be used within the library. It consists mainly of encyclopedias, dictionaries, handbooks, the World Almanac, manuals, WHO and other organizational reports, etc., and is housed on the 5th floor, on the west side of the library.
  4. BSMMU Publications and Theses, such as research reports, theses/dissertations, are also shelved separately in the 4th-floor Book Stack Area.
  5. This library is the depository library of the World Health Organization (WHO) has more than 1000 copies of publications.
  6. Other resources include maps, atlases, CDs/DVDs, tapes, and audio-visual material, which are kept in the Journal and Reference Section on the 5th floor. 

Library Management System

All collections of the Central Library are possible to search by the library management software system, which is named " Senayan Library Management System - SLIMS).

Information Services

The main task of the library is to satisfy its readers by rendering need-oriented services. The Library provides various services, such as reading, reference, Selection Dissemination of Information (SDI), reader's guidance, referral services, audio-visual, and Internet facilities to all users.

Library Manpower

At present, 12 (twelve) officers and 18 (eighteen) staff are working in 03 (three) shifts in the library.
